Carthago ICT
Sept 2013 — Jul 2022
Carthago ICT is the company where my professional Software Engineer career started. I started as a Java Developer, working in the consultancy branch of the company. This was a great opportunity to learn many different aspects of Software Engineering, as well as to get to know a variety of different cultures and way of working of the clients that I worked for.
During my time at Carthago ICT, I set up a Slack environment for communication, I converted the website, which was written in SilverStripe, to WordPress and managed the content on it.
I was always challenged to bring out the best of me and identify the areas where I could develop further. I’ve always had an interest in the frontend part of a software solution, so my consultancy jobs started to lean more towards Frontend Development.
Engagements at Carthago ICT
Full Stack Developer · Fire Control Systems (FCS)
— · Thales
Within the FCS department, I worked on an Angular application that visualised loads of time-sensitive data of a fire control system. It was built to aid the developers of that fire control system during the actual development.
As the lead developer, my job was to setup the main application, its libraries, the CI/CD and release workflow and research the use of microfrontends. I created a proof-of-concept using Webpack’s Module Federation. The main goal was to provide a modular application, which was composed runtime, without any excluded module to end up in the resulting JavaScript bundle.
Responsibilities
- Visualize large parts of data in Angular/Grafana
- Create and maintain Angular libraries
- Create and maintain a robuust CI/CD and release workflow
Achievements
- Built a runtime modular frontend with web-components using Module Federation
Full Stack Developer · Tacticos Baseline 3
— · Thales
TacticOS Baseline 3 was the third major version of the “Tactical Operating System”, which was running on Navy ships. For this version, a new technique had to be chosen to deliver the UI applications, as Java Swing was marked end-of-life.
With a small team, I researched different web development frameworks, how they work, what the benefits and drawbacks were, and how it would change the way of working within the department. This was the first time that a web framework would be used for the implementation.
For a tryout, I worked with a multinational team to develop that application in Angular. There were many obstacles in the process, but together with the team I managed to implement a Situational Awareness application using Angular. I worked with, and educated, a small team of Romanian colleagues.
Responsibilities
- Research web frameworks
- Develop the Angular application
- Train a small team to work with Angular
Achievements
- Created a composable UI library with complex state management using statemachines.
Full Stack Developer · WebCursistenManager v2
—
Inbetween consultancy projects, I worked on a React application with a Spring Boot backend. I was responsible for restructuring the datamodel and the Java backend and helped implementing functionality.
Full Stack Developer · OBR-WOZ
At the Dutch IRS I was part of a multidisciplinair team that implemented an application to process loads of data regarding houses and its worth and owners. This data was structured in a very complex XML and had to be processed at all costs.
Next to processing the data, we had to extract personal information to identify and verify the personal data. I had a major role in designing and structuring the application. I also greatly simplified the XML data to a custom data model, so the application could work with the data independent from the XML structure.
Responsibilities
- Analyse complex XSD/XML and design a more simplified data model
- Process messages from a MessageQueue and write it to a database
- Design a data model for the database in order to process the information properly
Achievements
- Succeeded in mapping a very complex XML structure to a simple data model for further processing
- Analysed the information in the XML messages and how to process it into the database
- Wrote an Angular application for maintainers to see what messages were received and resend faulty messages
Full Stack Developer · Topicus Onderwijs
— · Topicus
At Topicus I was part of a team that developed a digital learning environment for students and teachers in high school. It consisted of several separate portals where students, parents of students and teachers could login and do their work, check their schedule our grades.
I was responsible for developing several new modules as addition to the already existing application, as well as doing maintenance and bugfixing on the complete application.
During the development, I made sure that new additions to the UI were consistent with the rest of the application.
Responsibilities
- Implement new modules for the existing applications
- Analyse error reports and fix bugs
Achievements
- New modules went into production without any major issues
Full Stack Developer · Interface Products
— · Thales
The Interface Products department of Thales was responsible for developing Resource Controls, applications to control different types of Radars and Sensors, which were connected to TacticOS, a tactical operating system used on navy ships. I designed the UI for a new radar tracker. By conversing with end-users, I learned how the system was used, in order to design the best workflows.
After the design period, I was part of a team to develop the UI and the backend for it. To test the working of the Resource Controls, we created simulators with state machines.
As multiple User Interfaces were created, I took responsibility of the consistency of these UI’s, so they all looked the same.
Responsibilities
- Designing a the UI for a new tracker system
- Developing Resource Controls for several systems
- Creating and maintaining a consistent UI across these systems
- Implementing functional simulators, including state machines and message handling
Achievements
- Created a widely accepted UI styleguide for the complete department
- Took the lead in the UI design and was the go-to person for help and questions regarding UI
